The Crisis: Why the Current System Fails Mothers & Children
The U.S. economy was not designed to support single mothers or families in crisis. Here’s the reality:
📉 Financial Hardship:
- Women still earn less than men for the same work.
- Childcare costs often exceed rent or mortgage payments.
- Many moms work 70+ hours a week yet still can’t afford a stable home.
- Low income moms are priced out of childcare, with the cost of childcare in many US cities being more than the minimum wage, and waiting lists that begin before conception.
👩👧👦 Single Motherhood & Overwork:
- 83% of single parents in the U.S. are mothers.
- Child support is unreliable—many receive less than $50 per child per month or nothing at all. The national average is only $438 per month per child. That’s not enough to feed or house a child.
- Working long hours leads to chronic stress, burnout, and lack of time for their children.

🚨 The Impact on Children:
- Kids raised in financially unstable households are more likely to experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) like neglect and food insecurity.
- The absence of extended family and community support leaves children without the nurturing stability they need to thrive.
💰 Government Assistance Isn’t Enough:
- Social Security and SSI benefits are minimal, barely covering the cost of living. Most mothers do not have access to either of these funds.
- Public housing waitlists can take years, and rental costs are skyrocketing.
- The system prioritizes keeping mothers in poverty rather than empowering them toward financial stability. In order to receive benefits, a household’s income must be VERY LOW, so low that they don’t have access to housing.
- A family in poverty can get help from the state, in the form of work placement or training. States will often fund childcare, and training programs that rob families of precious time together and cost the state more per month than she even makes on the job. Who is winning there? Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to cover her expenses and let the children be raised in peace and safety?
The Solution: Mommune Living
👭 Strong Communities = Strong Families
A Mommune (Mom + Commune) is a co-housing model where mothers create a shared, financially stable living environment that benefits both them and their children.
✅ Lower Living Costs – Sharing expenses makes housing, food, and childcare affordable.
✅ Built-in Support System – Moms can rely on each other for childcare, emotional support, and community living, because they’re fully resourced and not competing for stability.
✅ More Time for Education & Careers – Instead of working three jobs to survive, mothers can invest in their community, building a future for their kids and each other.
✅ Healthier, Happier Kids – Children raised in supportive environments with multiple caregivers experience fewer ACEs and grow up with a stronger sense of belonging.
